Members of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia will hear arguments on the Justice Department’s attempt to remove the Honorable Royce C. Lamberth from the Cobell litigation and the validity of the injunction he placed on the Interior Department’s Computer system because its poor security.
Ms. Cobell is inviting all IIM account holders and their supporters to gather in front of the U. S. Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. on April 11. There will be drummers from the Blackfeet Nation and other tribes.
Oral arguments begin at 9:30 A.M. in Courtroom 20. (Cameras and tape recorders are not permitted in the courthouse.)
Once the hearing concludes, we will gather in front of the courthouse. The drummers will lead a procession to the front of the National Museum of the American Indian.
Speakers there will include: Ms. Cobell, Attorney Keith Harper of the Native American Rights Fund, Chairman Tex Hall, of The Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara Nation, and Co-Chairman, Trust Reform and Cobell Settlement Workgroup, Chief Jim Gray of the Intertribal Monitoring Association and Mary Johnson, a Navajo woman who has received little money from her Utah lands where government-approved oil wells have been pumping non-stop for decades. Senators and Members of Congress have been invited to speak. This event will conclude at 2 p.m.
At 3 p.m., Cobell and her supporters are invited to join former Senate leader Tom Daschle at The Center For American Progress for a discussion of the lawsuit. Ms. Cobell, Keith Harper, Chief Gray and Tex Hall will also participate. This will be held at the center’s office, 1333 H St. NW, 10th Floor. The public is invited to this event.
